Swimming Levels:
Developmental Events (Level 1):
These athletes must be water-safe. Coaches will work on stroke development. The goal for this group will be to build their confidence and ability to swim the entire length of the pool by themselves (25 yards) in water 5 ft to 12 ft deep. Some athletes may require 1:1 assistance while in the water. If your athlete needs 1:1 assistance you will need to provide that volunteer. All volunteer coaches must be approved by Special Olympics. Developmental athletes can compete in three of the following events: 10 Yard Assisted Swim; 15 Yard Walk;15 Yard Flotation Race; 15 Yard Unassisted Swim; 15 Yard Kickboard Race; 25 Yard Flotation Race; 25 Yard Kickboard Race.
Please note “Freestyle” means any stroke or method may be used – even dog-paddle.
Swimming Events (Level 2&3):
Athletes in this group must have confidence in water and demonstrate their ability to swim multiple lengths of the 25 yard pool in water 7 ft to 12 ft deep water without assistance. The focus of this group will be on stroke technique, turns, breathing, endurance and diving starts. These athletes can compete in three of the following events.
Freestyle – 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 y Backstroke – 25, 50, 100, 200 y Breaststroke – 25, 50, 100, 200 y Butterfly – 25, 50, 100, 200 y; Individual Medley – 100, 200, 400 y;Relays – 4x25, 50, 100, 200 y Freestyle & Medley
- Athletes must attend one of the first two practices to participate at Regionals
- It is important to attend all practices and if you can’t be at a practice please notify the head coach ahead of time. You should attend at least half the practices to compete at the competitions.
- You may participate in multiple sports but please consider the time commitment and note that you will have to choose which Regional event you compete in on May 18 : Track, Swimming or Tennis.
- The Special Olympics Regional Tournament is mandatory for any athlete who wishes to qualify and be considered for Summer Games at in June at Santa Clara University. Selection will be made on several criteria including: attendance at practices; positive and respectful attitude; ability to stay on campus in the dorms for the entire weekend under the supervision of a coach without their family and achievement of the highest medals at the Regional Competition.
